উল্লেখ্য, উপজেলা সদর ও বাঘা ইউনিয়নের মধ্যে দিয়ে প্রবাহিত সুরমা নদীর কারণে উপজেলা সদরের সাথে যোগাযোগ বিচ্ছিন্ন বাঘা ইউনিয়নের মানুষের প্রাণের দাবি ছিলো সুরমা নদীর উপরে একটি ব্রীজ নির্মাণ।
উপজেলা সবচেয়ে বড় ইউনিয়ন ‌‌’বাঘা’র ৩৩ হাজার মানুষ সুমাযনদীর কারণে সরাসরি উপজেলা সদরে যতায়াত করতে পারেন না। ইউনিয়নের সাধারণ মানুষ সুরমা নদী পার হয়ে গোলাপগঞ্জ উপজেলা সদরে আসেন। স্কুল কলেজের শিক্ষার্থী, ব্যবসায়ী, কৃষি পণ্য নিয়ে আসা কৃষক, মাছ নিয়ে আসা মৎসজীবী, বাজার করতে আসা মানুষসহ প্রতিদিন শত শত মানুষ খেয়া নৌকায় নদী পাড়ি দিয়ে উপজেলার সদর ও গোলাপগঞ্জ বাজারে আসেন। বর্ষা কালে স্কুল কলেজের শিক্ষার্থীরা জীবনের ঝুকি নিয়ে নদী পাড়ি দিয়ে স্কুল কলেজে যেতো হয়। এছাড়া, রোগী ও বৃদ্ধদের নদী পাড়ি দিতে সীমাহীন দুর্ভোগের শিকার হোন। সড়ক পথে উপজেলা সদরে আসতে তাদের সদর উপজেলার বাইপাস হয়ে দক্ষিণ সুরমা উপজেলা হয়ে গোলাপগঞ্জে আসতে হয়। ইউনিয়নের মানুষ প্রতিদিনের দুর্ভোগ থেকে মুক্তি পেতে একটি ব্রীজের জন্য দাবি জানিয়ে আসছিলেন। গত এক মাস পূর্বে বাঘা ইউনিয়নের বিভিন্ন কর্মসূচি পালনের সময় নুরুল ইসলাম নাহিদ এমপি গোলাপগঞ্জ-বাঘা ব্রীজ নির্মাণ করা হবে বলে স্থানীয়দের আশ্বস্ত করেন। সম্প্রতি তিনি এলজিইডির প্রধান প্রকৌশলীর সাথে দেখা করে ব্রীজ নির্মাণে ডিও লেটার দেয়ায় ব্রীজ হওয়ার ব্যাপারে আশ্বান্বিত হয়ে উঠেছেন ইউনিয়নবাসী। সেতু নির্মাণের প্রক্রিয়া শুরু হওয়ায় এলাকাবাসী সাবেক শিক্ষামন্ত্রী নুরুল ইসলাম নাহিদ এমপির প্রতি কৃতজ্ঞতা ও ধন্যবাদ জানান।
তারা জানান, ব্রীজ নির্মিত হলে শুধু বাঘা ইউনিয়নবাসীই নন, কানাইঘাট উপজেলার রাজাগঞ্জ ইউনিয়নসহ কানাইঘাটের বিপুল সংখ্যক মানুষ উপকৃত হবেন। তাদের জীবনযাত্রা ব্যাপক উন্নতি ও পরিবর্তন আসবে।
