শুক্রবার বিকালে শারীরিক অবস্থার অবনতি হওয়ায় তাকে এয়ার অ্যাম্বুলেন্সে করে ঢাকায় আনা হয়। সন্ধ্যায় গেন্ডারিয়া আসগর আলী হাসপাতালে ভর্তি করা হলে ৬টা ২০ মিনিটে সেখানেই তার মৃত্যু হয়। তার বয়স হয়েছিল ১০৩ বছর।
হেফাজতে ইসলামের যুগ্ম মহাসচিব মুফতি ফয়জুল্লাহ এই তথ্য নিশ্চিত করেছেন।

শারীরিক অবস্থার অবনতি হওয়ার পর বৃহস্পতিবার মধ্যরাতে হাটহাজারী মাদ্রাসা থেকে অ্যাম্বুলেন্সে করে চট্টগ্রাম মেডিকেল কলেজ (চমেক) হাসপাতালে নেয়া হয় তাকে। পরে হাসপাতালের তৃতীয় তলার আইসিইউর ৮ নম্বর বেডে ভর্তি করা হয় হেফাজতের আমিরকে।

এর আগে ছাত্র বিক্ষোভের মুখে গতকাল রাতে চট্টগ্রামের হাটহাজারী মাদ্রাসার মহাপরিচালকের পদ থেকে স্বেচ্ছায় সরে দাঁড়ান হেফাজতের আমির। রাতে মাদ্রাসার মজলিসে শূরার বৈঠকে আল্লামা শফী তার এ সিদ্ধান্তের কথা জানান। তবে তাকে সদরুল মুহতামিম বা উপদেষ্টা হিসেবে রাখা হয়।

আল্লামা শাহ আহমদ শফী হেফাজতে ইসলাম বাংলাদেশের প্রতিষ্ঠাতা ও আমির ছিলেন। তিনি একইসঙ্গে বেফাকুল মাদারিসিল আরাবিয়া বাংলাদেশ এবং আল হাইয়াতুল উলয়া লিলজামিয়াতিল কওমিয়ার চেয়ারম্যান ছিলেন। দীর্ঘকাল দারুল উলুম মুঈনুল ইসলাম হাটহাজারীর মহাপরিচালকের দায়িত্ব পালন করেন। দেশের সর্বজন শ্রদ্ধেয় শীর্ষ আলেম হিসেবে বিবেচিত হতেন। কওমি মাদ্রাসার দাওরায়ে হাদিসের সনদের যে স্বীকৃতি সেটা তার হাত ধরেই আসে।
